ECOEM CONSORTIUM +49% OF DOMESTIC WEEE MANAGED IN 2024

Luca Fasolino, General Manager of the Consortium, comments: “It has been a very important year of growth for ECOEM, with increasing rates across all categories in which we operate. Despite our country being in an apparent phase of calm, these results demonstrate the excellent work carried out by the Consortium in WEEE collection. We hope that legislative simplifications will provide greater support to the market and that new communication provisions can truly strengthen and share the concept that WEEE collection and raw material recycling remains a strategic activity for our country and the environment in which we live”

2024 Collection Data

In 2024, the ECOEM Consortium managed over 8,640 tonnes of WEEE throughout Italy, an increase of 49% compared to 2023 results (5,740 tonnes), values that were achieved by processing over 6,000 collection requests from Collection Centers across Italy. Specifically, all Categories show positive results, with the world of small appliances in Category R4, which currently represents ECOEM’s largest category, recording a significant increase (more than 1,980 tonnes, a 44% increase compared to 2023). The collection of “heavier” WEEE, which contains high quantities of recoverable raw materials, is also increasing: Category R1 (cooling and climate) exceeds 787 tonnes collected (+27%), while Category R2 (large appliances) totals more than 497 tonnes. Following is Category R3 (TVs and monitors) marking about 748 tonnes, a 64% increase compared to 2023, and lastly Category R5 (light sources), which stands at 72 tonnes (+36%) compared to the previous year. The number of collection points managed across the country has also increased, rising from 717 in 2023 to 1,116 in 2024 (recording a considerable increase in logistics activities +55% compared to the previous year).

“The collection targets,” continues Luca Fasolino, “that we had set for 2024 have been largely exceeded, demonstrating strong organizational capacity that has well adapted to a considerable increase in volumes. However, we remain highly attentive to the National scenario, being aware that commitment must be constant and even greater to achieve the targets set by Europe, which are unfortunately still very far from reality”
