Extended Producer Responsibility for Online Marketplaces, the Solution Designed by ECOEM

With the entry into force of Directive No. 166 of November 2024, all e-commerce platforms operating in product supply chains where EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) obligations apply, including WEEE and Batteries, will need to comply with the requirements aimed at facilitating the declaration process and simplifying the administrative procedures that online sellers are subject to.

Specifically to meet the obligations set by the current directive, the ECOEM Consortium has implemented a specific solution for Marketplaces hosting third-party sellers operating in technology product supply chains and therefore falling within the scope of WEEE and Batteries. The directive is the result of a previous study conducted on the need to identify thousands of companies that act as product exporters to our country. Online sellers represent a focal point regarding the quantities of goods that are sent directly to end consumers without going through a National distributor and therefore without adequate management of EPR environmental obligationsLuca Fasolino, General Manager of the ECOEM Consortium, comments, “in this context, Marketplaces are configured as a relevant entity, being able to handle bureaucratic formalities on behalf of Sellers, simplifying the declaration system and allowing sellers to actively participate in financing the end-of-life management of their products
